Joseph A. Christiano, Jr. MD
Dr. Christiano is a Board Certified Neurosurgeon with specialty training in Surgical Pain Management and Movement Disorder surgery. In addition to general Neurosurgical procedures such as Complex Spinal Surgery, Spinal Fusion Surgery and Brain Tumor Surgery, Dr. Christiano has additional expertise in Spinal Cord Stimulation, Surgical Pain Management and Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson’s Disease and Tremor.
As the director of the Surgical Pain Management Program at Western Neuro, Dr. Christiano offers a detailed look at many complicated pain problems. The program treats a variety of pain related conditions including Trigeminal Neuralgia, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS/ RSD) and Failed Back Surgery Syndrome, to name a few. Dr. Christiano is keenly aware of the challenges faced by those with chronic, severe pain. He emphasizes patient-centered care to quickly diagnose the condition and create a suitable treatment plan. He believes that spending time with his patients and understanding their pain management goals offers the best long-term outcomes. Dr. Christiano has extensive experience in the treatment of painful spinal disorders and offers tried and true as well as novel treatments for these conditions. Indeed, he is a leader in the field of Spinal Cord Stimulation.
The Movement Disorder Surgery Program offers Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery in a cutting edge, state of the art intraoperative imaging environment. This Surgical Operating suite allows for precise and effective DBS placement under general anesthesia, which maximizes patient comfort and safety. The intraoperative CT suite was the first of its kind in the United States and, coupled with Dr. Christiano’s expertise in Functional Neurosurgery, optimizes patient outcomes.
Dr. Christiano’s pursuit of excellence continues to this day. His fellowship in Pain & Functional Neurosurgery was completed at Oregon Health & Science University’s nationally renowned program under the direction of Kim Burchiel, M.D. Dr. Christiano then joined Western Neurosurgery, Ltd. in 2003, where he has practiced ever since. He continues to offer the very latest in neurosurgical technology to benefit his patients and accepts many complex cases where patients have not seen improvement with previous procedures.
Dr Christiano is a native of Central Massachusetts and comes from a long line of medical practitioners. A practicing Buddhist, his hobbies include Chinese kung-fu, boxing, and visual arts. When not in the OR, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children.
