Pain (Acute & Chronic)
Pain is a sensation of discomfort. It can range from mild discomfort or distress to severe agonizing pain. Pain can be classified in many ways but two broad categories are helpful: acute pain & chronic pain.
Acute pain can be moderate to severe and usually resolves within 3 months time. Acute pain is often a signal that body is being injured in some way and resolves when the injury has healed appropriately. In some cases, acute pain can change into chronic pain.
Chronic pain can be mild to severe and lasts longer than three to six months. Chronic pain can sometimes persist after an injury has healed because of changes in the tissue or nervous system. Some forms of chronic pain continue even though medical and radiographic tests show only minor injury or no injury at all. Chronic pain can be challenging to treat even with medication and surgeries.
To evaluate your painful condition, we may ask:
- When and how did your pain start? Did it begin after an injury?
- How would rate your pain on a 0-10 scale?
- Can you describe your pain?
- What does it feel like?
- Where is it located?
- Does it travel to other body parts? If yes, then can you show us?
- Did it start in a smaller area and now involve a larger area of your body?
- What helps diminish your pain and what makes it worse?
- What treatments have been tried? Were they partially or fully effective for a period of time?
- Do you take medication for your pain? If yes, what medication & how often?
This information is often helpful finding the cause of your pain & its treatment options.
